Linux on the Thinkpad T14s
Laptop ordered Aug 18, 2025,
I had wanted to get a fast AMD processor, and this one offers some AI enhancements as well.
With 64GB memory and 1TB disk I really don't need to upgrade, but there is room for a 2nd
M.2 in this beast (albeit the shorter type).
Specs:
- AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX PRO 370 Processor (2.00 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)
- Windows 11 Pro 64
- ntegrated AMD Radeon™ 890M
- 64 GB DDR5-5600MT/s (SODIMM)(2 x 32 GB)
- 1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 Performance TLC Opal
- 14" WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%sRGB, 500 nits, 60Hz, Low Power
- 5MP RGB+IR with Microphone and Privacy Shutter
- 4 Cell Li-Polymer 57 Wh
- Fingerprint Reader
- MediaTek Wi-Fi 7 MT7925 2x2 BE & Bluetooth® 5.4
- Part Number: 21RV000NUS

Given this is a relatively new processor, I decided to skip Kubuntu 24.04.03 LTS and use Kubuntu 25.04 with Plasma 6.
It locked up twice in the first half hour.... time to try 25.04
below here old t480 stuff
Installed Kubuntu 24.04, comes with KDE 6.3.4
COmments:
- To boot, hit ENTER, then (if needed) F12 to get to a non-default boot device
- Locked up once after coming out of suspend. have to watch that.
- Light use can bring power down to 5-6W
- Little nook sticking out is actually useful to open in the dark
- WiFi7 seems a bit slow? needs better tests
- Although geekbench6 showed a bit leap from my previous intel, nemobench5 showed no difference,
in fact, it regressed a bit. not nice. gcc 14.2.0 - perhaps better with newer compiler that knows
this CPU.
- reviews talk about "coil whine", but have not noticed it. didn't push the GPU
- hdparm showed an impressive 5000+ MB/sec, but 10 days later i got just 3000+
