Linux on the Dell Latitude 5420
Laptop received as an office hand-me-down ordered May xxx, 2022. Fairly loaded
(64GB mem; 1TB SSD). USB-C power. Battery was only at 80%. Later in August, got
an updated battery, the old one was ony 41 Wh, but had 30 Wh left. The new one is
61 Wh. $107 (excl. tax) , for the record.
Here are the specs:
to-be-updated from its cousin xps13
11th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1185G7 Processor (8MB Cache, up to ?4.5 GHz)
64GB ?4267MHz ?LPDDR4x Memory
?4-Cell, 41/61 WHr, Integrated battery
65W USB-C AC Adapter Black
Intel(R) Iris Xe Graphics
1 TB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
? 13.4inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) InfinityEdge Non-Touch Anti-Glare 500-Nit Display
Good, Bad and Ugly impressions:
- +:
Ubuntu 20/22.04 LTS.
- +:
- -: two USB-C ports, but only on left side
OK, there is a micro-SD slot on the left, and a 3.5mm audio jack on the right.
- -: compared to my normal Lenovo, the Fn-Ctrl is now Ctrl-Fn on the lower left of keyboard.
It could be remapped?
- +: the screen now folds flat. The xps was not great.
- -: no buttons by the touch pad,
- -: sometime in 2023/24 the laptop sometimes goes into a mode running at 200MHz (!!!). It seems
this happens after a suspend, but the other way around also worked. When it was at 200MHz, suspending
it and waking up, it went back to normal max speed.
